For Mylio Photos+ subscribers, the Photo DeDupe tool helps clean up unwanted duplicate photos from your media library. It starts by scanning your entire Mylio Photos Library and will generate a list of files where it detects two or more copies of the same media.
- Click the Tools icon
in the left sidebar and select Photo DeDupe
.
- Photo DeDupe will list all files with one or more duplicates. Scroll through the list and review the differences between duplicate files. Click here for more information on reviewing duplicate sets.
- Check the box for the duplicate file(s) you wish to move or delete or use Auto-Mark to have Mylio Photos+ automatically detect the best files and mark the remaining files for removal or deletion.
- When you’ve finished reviewing the files, click the Delete Marked or Move Marked button.
How does Photo DeDupe work?
Photo DeDupe uses existing information in your library to quickly identify specific criteria and determine if files are unique. If any of the following conditions are met, it will be marked as a duplicate:
- Exact files that are the same size and resolution
- Exact files that are the same name but in a different folder
- Exact files that match but have different names
- Exact files that match but have different metadata
It is important to note that Photo DeDupe will only detect exact matches. For instance, different sizes, resolutions, or visually similar images, such as a burst of nearly identical shots, will not be marked as duplicates.
Merging Metadata
When removing or deleting duplicates with Photo DeDupe, you can choose to merge metadata into the remaining photo. This helps you preserve important details such as copyright, keywords, title, caption, and more.
Key behaviors when merging metadata:
- Single-value fields (e.g., Title): If both versions have different values, the version with higher Photo Prioritization wins.
- Multi-value fields (e.g., Keywords): Keywords and other multi-value fields from both versions are combined.
- Album Memberships: The photo remains in all Albums assigned to either version, regardless of which copy is deleted.
- Categories: Categories assigned to either version are retained on the remaining photo.
When there’s conflicting metadata, differences are highlighted in yellow for easy review before merging.
