Adding an External Drive

Adding an external drive as a Vault is an effortless way to protect your photos. Vaults can be any device that has enough available storage space to hold your entire photo library.

Once a Vault has been designated, your entire Mylio Library, including any new photos, will automatically be saved to this drive when it is available. If the drive is unavailable or disconnected, Mylio will update it the next time it is connected.

!NOTE: If you prefer to import files from an external hard drive without designating it as a Vault, please see the Import from an Internal or External Drive section.

To add an external drive as a Vault:

1. Open Mylio and ensure the external drive is connected to your computer.
2. Go to the Dashboard view and select Devices.
   

3. Click the ADD button at the top of the Devices section and select External drive.

4. Select the external drive from the list that you wish to designate as a Vault and click the Next button.

5. Your external drive will be listed as a new Device in the Devices section of the Dashboard.

!WARNING: Any photo deleted in the Mylio app on any device will be automatically deleted from your Vault as well. To create a redundant backup system that protects against accidental data loss due to user error, we recommend using a backup utility such as Time Machine on macOS and/or a cloud backup utility such as Backblaze.

!NOTE: An external drive that has been designated as a Time Machine on macOS cannot be used as a Mylio Vault.

!NOTE: If the external drive you are adding as a Vault already has photos on it that you want to use, consider adding those images with the Linked Folder option instead.
