Mylio Photos+ makes it simple to access your media on all your devices. The sync process ensures that your devices always have the same information about the media in your library. Each time new photo and video files are added to one device, they become available on all your other devices through syncing. Syncing also ensures the organization and editing work you do on one device is available on all other devices connected to your Mylio account.

Understanding Syncing with Mylio Photos+

Mylio Photos+ uses a peer-to-peer connection to sync your photos, videos, and files between your devices safely and quickly. Peer-to-peer connections do not rely on an external platform like the Cloud to transfer files. Instead, your devices can talk to each other directly over a network.

Mylio Photos+ can sync between your devices when the following criteria are met:

  • All devices must be logged into the same Mylio Account.
  • All devices must be connected to the same network or viewable by each other on the internet.
  • All devices must be running the Mylio Photos+ app.

Important Sync Terminology

Catalog – The catalog contains thumbnails and XMP Files for every photo, video, or document in your library. Mylio Photos+ will add the catalog to every connected device to facilitate remote access and sync.

Device Sync Policy – A Device Sync Policy controls how your library information is stored on Mylio-connected devices. Device Sync Policies let you control the amount of space used by Mylio Photos+ and the photo quality available on each device (e.g., catalog only, optimized images, or original quality). Mylio Photos+ comes pre-loaded with several device sync policy presets that are ideal for typical workflows and also allows you to create custom device sync policies to fit your needs.

Optimized Image – An optimized image is a medium-quality version of your photo (approximately 5% the size of the original-quality file) that accurately represents your image while taking up a fraction of the storage space. Optimized images are often indistinguishable from the original and are fully editable. Optimized images created from Raw image formats retain similar flexibility to the original when recovering tonal details.

Original – An original is a full-quality image, video, or document file. File sizes vary widely, depending on the file type, resolution, and pixel dimensions. Original-quality image files are fully editable.

Thumbnails – A thumbnail is a miniature version of your photo (less than 1% the size of the Original) that is used by the catalog for referencing your entire library. You can organize your media and add metadata while viewing thumbnails, but editing and export options are limited.

XMP FIles – XMP files (extensible metadata platform) are an industry-standard format for holding metadata and other information about your photos. The Mylio Photos+ catalog utilizes XMP files to move, edit, and organize information between devices.

Hi Steven - If you capture photos on your phone, the original media will continue to reside in your camera roll or media library, even after being added to Mylio Photos. Mylio does not automatically delete anything from the camera roll or media library UNLESS you run the free up space command. https://manual.mylio.com/24.3/en/topic/free-up-space-on-camera-roll-or-media-library

If you’re referring to what is stored by Mylio Photos, your phone is by default set to SpaceSaver which does not include original-quality files. However, you can tell Mylio Photos to sync a specific folder of originals to a specific device and make them always available using Tap to Sync. https://manual.mylio.com/24.3/en/topic/store-specific-folders-locally-for-offline-access-tap-to-sync

Despite the documentation, it is not clear if the photos taken on the original device (for example a mobile phone) remain as full originals on the source device with the sync policies only applying to photos that are from other sources.

I want to make sure that all devices retain their originals and (except the vault which should contain a full copy of all devices photos) only have versions of photos from other devices based on the sync policy. It is not clear whether for instance if I choose catalogue only the the originals remain on my phone, or if the are moved/copied to a vault and replaced with a catalogue only representation.
